1.2. National Bibliography and Cataloguing Division (edita.lichtenbergova@nkp.cz)

 

  • acts as the national bibliographic agency, prepares CIP records

  • processes all newly acquired materials (published since 1801) - with the exception of periodicals and printed music - held by the National Conservation Collection, and the Universal circulating Collection as well as the Reserves collection

  • processes selected materials at the analytic level

  • provides cataloguing for the Bohemica collection (materials published anywhere in the world in Czech, by Czech nationals, and/or dealing with things Czech)

  • makes all cataloguing available on the Internet

  •  is responsible for national authority files (both Names and Subjects)

  •  keeps abreast of international standards and familiarises the Czech library  community with them

  •  standardises Czech cataloguing policy AACR2 interpretations, MARC21, UNIMARC, UDC, Konspekt usage

  • organises conferences and seminars and special events, such as KATPOL  (cataloguing policy), tarinings of cataloguers

  • is an active participant in international projects in the areas of cataloguing

 1.2.1 Descriptive Cataloguing Departme

  • provides descriptive cataloguing for all newly received printed monographs  (published since 1801), takes part in shared cataloguing projects

  • prepares translations of basic standards

  • acts as the major arbiter of cataloguing policies for printed monographs

  • studies international cataloguing standards and proposes their interpretation and implementation

  • creates and maintains documentation related to bibliographic description of printed monographs in  connection with other Czech libraries and also those abroad

  • creates and keeps up contacts with Czech and foreign libraries

  • co-operates in retrospective conversion

  • acts as a consultant for descriptive cataloguing

 

 

 1.2.2 Subject Cataloguing Department

  • performs subject cataloguing of printed monographs according to national and international standards

  • creates and maintains subject displays in the national database

  • prepares translations of basic standards (UDC, Konspekt)

  • prepares consultations regarding implementation and their  Czech interpretation

  • develops cataloguing policy in regard to subject cataloguing, on the basis of  international standards

  • creates and maintains documentation related to subject cataloguing, in  connection with other Czech libraries and also those abroad

  • acts as a consultant for subject cataloguing

 

 1.2.3 Special Materials Cataloguing Department

  •  performs descriptive and subject cataloguing of special materials (sound recordings, graphic materials, cartographic materials,  microforms)

  • studies international standards for special materials end electronic resources bibliographic description and proposes their interpretation and implementation for both bibliographic and subject description of special materials

  • prepares and updates documentation on data applied for special materials cataloguing

  • creates and keeps up contacts with Czech and foreign libraries

  • participates in conservation and preservation projects

  • acts as a consultant for descriptive and subject cataloguing of special materials and electronic resources

 

1.2.4 Department of Analytical Indexing

  •  performs descriptive and subject cataloguing of articles in  Czech selected titles according to national and international standards

  •  creates and maintains displays for analytical indexing

  • studies international standards for component parts - journal articles  description and proposes their interpretation and implementation

  • develops cataloguing policy in regard to subject cataloguing  on the basis of international standards

  •  prepares and updates documentation on data applied for component parts - journal articles

  • creates and keeps up contacts with Czech and foreign libraries

  •  co-ordination of Co-operative system of Czech article bibliography

  • acts as a consultant for descriptive and subject cataloguing of component parts - journal articles

  

 

 1.2.5 National Authorities Department

  •  verifies and authorises form of all headings contained in bibliographic records

  • seeks additional sources for the creation of national authority headings

  • co-ordinates with other libraries and information centres creation of unique headings

  • studies international standards for authority records and proposes their interpretation and implementation in Czech libraries

  •  is responsible for national authorities projects

  • prepares and updates documentation on data applied for authority records

  • creates and keeps up contacts with Czech and foreign libraries

  • represents the National Library at national and international meetings devoted to discussions of policies of national authority headings

 

 1.2.6 Union Catalogues Department

  • maintains Union Catalogue of the Czech Republic

  • co-ordinates with other libraries and information centres creation of the catalogue

  • studies international standards for bibliographic records and proposes their interpretation and implementation in Czech libraries; organizes trainings for cataloguers in libraries

  •  is responsible for national union catalogue  project

  • prepares and updates documentation on data applied for bibliographic records

  •  creates and keeps up contacts with Czech and foreign libraries
