History of the Department of
Music
The National Library Department of Music is the largest
center of its kind in the Czech Republic. It was established in 1923. Its
founder and first director Ladislav Vycpálek, himself composer and
philologist, laid out the collection policy to acquire, process and make
available the broadest possible variety of primary and secondary sources
with emphasis on bohemical materials. The year 1965 marks the inception of
the Union Catalog of Music which registers music historical sources in the
Czech Republic.
